Question = mechanical energy is supplied to DC generator at the rate of 4200 j/s . The generator delivers 32.2 ampere at 120 volt . (1) what is the percentage efficency of the generator ? (2) how much energy is lost per minute of operation ?
Solution = formula , efficiency = output power/ input power ×100 ,
• input power= 4200 j/s , or , 4200 watt ,
» Electrical energy in watt- second or ( joules)= voltage in volts × current in ampere × time in second , or (v×i×t)
» So , output power = v ×i = 120 × 32.2 , = 3864 Watt , » efficiency ( η) = 3864/4200 ×100 = 92% , answer ✓
(2) energy lost per minute of operation = power lost × time , » power lost= input power - output power , = 4200 - 3864 = 336 watt.
» energy lost per minute (60 sec ) of operation = power lost × time , = 336 × 60 , = 20160 joules/minute , answer ✓
